“The best I’ve seen in twenty years - If I had a torch I'd throw it to him."
Harvey Andrews
Sometimes an acoustic guitar and a voice is enough, if you've got things called songs. Roger Davies has crafted his skills into something impressive, direct and deceptively uncluttered and is one of the most exciting singer songwriters to emerge from the West Yorkshire folk scene in many years.
After opening shows for artists such as Cara Dillon, Alex Lloyd and Harvey Andrews, Roger Davies now performs his own sold out shows at folk clubs and festivals across the country. His second album 'Northern Trash' was released in April 2007 to a flurry of good reviews:
"Defiantly "northern", yes, but certainly not trash. Roger's a West Yorkshire (Brighouse-born) singer-songwriter who engages your attention straight away with his easy, unassuming, captivatingly relaxed performing style and his knack for finding musical poetry in purely local places, stories and references. It's been said that if anyone can make Huddersfield seem beautiful, then it's Roger!"
David Kidman, 2007
Roger has recently played at the Black Swan Folk Club in York, Uppermill Folk Club, The Red Shed in Wakefield and the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield. His recent festival appearances include the Towersey, Shepley, Crawley, Wath, Holmfirth, Ashover, Stainsby and Birds Edge Folk Festivals.
The Marsden Jazz Festival last October gave Roger the opportunity to appear as the special guest of the nationally acclaimed poet Simon Armitage. Roger has also performed in concert with Bernard Wrigley and John Tamms & Barry Coope. His third album White Roses is due this October.
"There is potentially a huge talent emerging in our midst: Roger Davies. His new songs tell of the ordinariness of life in Huddersfield, amongst other things, all delivered with extraordinary, understated humour and delightful turns of phrase... a great future ahead" - Joe Grint, Tykes News
As a thoroughly professional, endearing and engaging live performer, Roger is available for Club and Festival bookings throughout 2009 – 2010 and beyond.
